The journey to better health is not limited to visits to the doctor's office, and the practice of Chinese Medicine is not just limited to acupuncture and herbology. Medical scholars and practitoners in China have long studied the effects of diet and lifeestyle habits as the foundation of health. In Chinese language, the word for doctor also means teacher. In ancient times, these healers and teachers taught their patients how to live in balance, rather than treating them when they became sick. Rather than treating the diseases as they came along, the doctors believed that the proper diet and lifestyle habits could avoid the causes of 10,000 diseases.

 

One's lifestyle is a collection of habits that people incorporate into their lives, often without thought or evaluation. This includes: work, rest, hours of sleep, exercise, sexuality, posture (how one sits, stands, or walks), hobbies, eating habits, stress-handling, and more. Some of these habits are healthy, such as daily exercise, others are not, one obvious example being smoking. Keeping these habits in balance brings good health, having them out of balance, ie too little sleep or too much food, brings disease. The detrimental effects of unhealthy lifestyle habits can be subtle and gradual, and may not be apparent until it's too late. Think of a hot stove. Someone places their hand even near the stove and they'll know to be careful. However, if someone places their hand on a cold stove that they don't know is warming up, and they'll be burned before they realize.
