Meditation often involves turning attention to a single point of reference. This attention can vary from visualizing of one's breath, a specific organ, certain acupuncture meridian pathways, attaining no mind or no thought, and heightened mindfulness. It is recognized as a component of many religions but can be practiced as a non-theological more philosophical practice. There are many different meditation disciplines that are used for health purposes. Mediation has been practiced since antiquity. Different meditative disciplines encompass a wide range of spiritual and/or psychophysical practices, which may emphasize different goals-from achievement of a higher state of consciousness, to greater focus, creativity or self-awareness, health, or simply a more relaxed and peaceful frame of mind. Basically, meditation can influence healing and regeneration in the body. It has profound effects on the brain and neurologic pathways.
The word meditation originally comes from the Indo-European root med-, meaning "to measure." From the root med- are also derived the English words mete, medicine, modest, and moderate. It entered English as meditation through the Latin meditatio, which originally indicated every type of physical or intellectual exercise, then later evolved into the more specific meaning "contemplation." From Socrates pronouncing that an "unexamined life is a life not worth living" to the present Dalai Lama on mediating on the expansion of compassion throughout the word, friend and enemy alike.
Eastern meditation techniques have been adapted and increasingly practiced in Western culture. The term "meditation" seems to bring up the vision of a bearded man sitting cross-legged in front of a stone wall. However, here is some simple advice:
Four things:
- Wear loose fitting clothes
- Sit comfortably in a quiet dark room
- Focus on your breathing
- Practice daily! Shrfu Patterson, a great teacher of meditation and the internal Chinese martial arts, said it best,....it's like placing a piece of paper on the floor. At the end of the day you don't have much just one sheet....at the end of the week, 7 sheets, in 1 month 30 sheets, 6 months nice stack, in 1 year large stack, in 5 years the whole room is filled. The point is little by little and it adds up. So, start small but practice everyday Cool
